Flat Back Stud FAQ

Everything You Need to Know About Our Best Selling Push-Pin Studs

If you've only ever worn traditional butterfly-back earrings, this style might feel new — so we put together this guide to answer all your questions about how to wear them, and what makes these earrings so special.

What are your flat back studs made of?

Our flat back studs are made from ASTM-F136 implant-grade titanium, with a durable PVD gold plating over top. That's a lot of big words to say that they're completely hypoallergenic, tarnish-free, and waterproof — safe for sensitive ears, new piercings, and everyday wear (yes, even in the shower or pool!).

What's the difference between threaded and threadless (push-pin) backs?

Threaded (screw-back) earrings have a post with grooves that you twist a backing onto — like a tiny screw. Our new threadless push-pin studs work differently: the post is smooth, and the decorative front piece simply pushes onto the post and stays snug, with no twisting required. They're quicker to put in, easier to take out, and there's no risk of stripping the threads over time.

How do I put in my push-pin flat back studs?

  1. Insert the flat back post through your piercing from behind your ear, pushing forward.
  2. Once the post comes through to the front, take your decorative front piece and gently push it onto the post until it's snug.
  3. That's it — no twisting needed! You should feel some slight tension as you push it into place.

Tip: If you are having trouble getting the post in from behind your piercing, we also offer a flat back applicator which makes the process a little easier.

How do I take them off?

  1. Holding one hand on the from of the flat back, and one on the back gently pull the front piece straight off the post.
  2. If it feels stuck, don't panic! continue pulling with firm pressure with both hands uthe tension might wiggle it very slightly side to side while pulling, rather than tugging hard.

How do I adjust the tension if the fit feels too tight or too loose?

Unlike traditional earrings, the tension on these is adjusted by very slightly bending the post itself.

  • Too loose? Add a very slight bend to the post so the front piece grips more snugly. You can do this by removing the earring from your ear, putting the front piece halfway into the post, and bending slightly.
  • Too tight? Gently straighten the post back out just a touch.

When you earrings arrive they will likely be the perfect tension for your liking already. If you would like it a little tighter or looser hold, make small adjustments and test as you go. Reminder— a little goes a long way, and over-bending can weaken the post over time.

Are these safe for sensitive ears?

Yes! ASTM F136 Titanium is globally recognized as the gold standard for medical implants and high-quality body jewelry (which is exactly why we use this for our studs!) It has zero nickel content making it a perfect choice for super sensitive skin as well as new (and still healing) piercings.

Can I wear them in water?

Absolutely. Thanks to the PVD gold plating, our flat back studs are tarnish-free and waterproof, so you can shower, swim, and sweat without worrying about damage or discoloration.

A few troubleshooting tips

  • Trouble getting the front piece on? Get close to a mirror so you can see where you are aiming better- still having trouble? Ask a friend
  • Earring feels loose after wearing for a while?  — a very slight bend to the post will tighten the fit right back up.
  • First time using push-pin studs? Practice a few times before wearing them out so you feel confident with the motion — it becomes second nature fast!
